Freedom of Speech & Digital Footprint
Fighting Bias in the Media
We must combat the growing censorship in this country by the Trump administration and the consolidated media. It is imperative to re-fund the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and National Public Radio. We need to ensure that there are independent media outlets to ensure unbiased reporting and allow for an informed public. I will fight for stronger antitrust legislation that prevents individuals and corporations from owning large swaths of broadcast, production, and streaming industries.
We must continue to fight for free speech and peaceful assembly. We must stop our politicians from using rhetoric that threatens these rights or using force to quell protesters. We must ensure that people feel comfortable debating their ideas online or in-person and supporting candidates without the threat of being harmed.
Limits of Free Speech
The 1st amendment does not allow acts of violence or calls for violence. I have experienced unacceptable ethnic slurs as a Jewish American and seen my childhood home of worship vandalized with a Swastika. I reject Trump’s loyalty pledges for college campuses.
We should not limit peaceful campus discussions, protests, or lectures. We should ensure all students can express their ideas without fear of violence or retribution.
Personal Privacy Protections
I will call for additional personal privacy protections. We must ensure that advances in AI and surveillance technology don’t come at the expense of individual rights. We need to eliminate any federal databases that are being used beyond their designed purposes. I will call for a full review of information that Elon Musk, DOGE, or Palantir obtained without proper security clearance through the Trump administration.
We must protect minors from spending too much time online and from being the target of personalized advertisements and misinformation, particularly from AI. I will fight for a stronger framework for user service agreements and AI regulation and will hold social media companies responsible for pushing their products to underaged users.
Finally, an increasingly digital world means an indelible digital footprint. We must find ways to strike a balance between our ability to search online and individuals’ right to be forgotten. We must establish better statutes of limitation for removing identifying information from publications for individuals that committed nonviolent offenses.
